Supplemental Newborn Screening in Pennsylvania

A recent report in the Philadelphia Inquirer described the importance of newborn screening and the expansion screening to include disorders such as MCAD and Glutaric Acidemia Type I (GA-I).  Neo Gen Screening offers a Comprehensive Supplemental Screening Program to all hospitals in Pennsylvania and the United States. Currently, nearly 70% of Pennsylvania hospitals use our supplemental testing and follow-up services to expand the PA state-mandated screening requirements beyond four disorders.   The map below shows our current and supplemental screening program for hospitals in Pennsylvania by county.  Neo Gen Screening also currently has a contract with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to screen every baby for the four state-mandated disorders.  However, a hospital may not be part of our expanded program even if the county is shaded blue.  A blue shading indicates that one or more hospitals in a county participate in the supplemental screening program.

Parents awaiting the birth of a new baby should ask their health care provider about the availability of supplemental newborn screening services at their maternity hospital.   Additional information about supplemental newborn screening can be obtained from Neo Gen Screening.
